The homestead exemption provides a reduction in property taxes for eligible senior citizen and disabled homeowners. The expanded homestead exemption provides a greater reduction for eligible disabled veterans.
To qualify, veterans need to meet two requirements. They must own and occupy the home as their principle place of residence as of January 1 of the year for which they apply and be a veteran of the armed forces of the United States who were discharged under honorable conditions and who have either received a total (100%) disability rating for service-connected disabilities or received a total (100%) disability rating for service-connected disabilities based on a determination of individual unemployability regardless of age or income.
The expanded homestead exemption allows eligible disabled veteran homeowners to shield $50,000 worth of their home’s market value from local property taxes; meaning a home worth $100,000 would be billed as if it were worth $50,000.
Applications can be found on the Holmes County Auditor website under forms at www.holmescountyauditor.org or one can be mailed to you by calling the office at 330-674-1896.
Applications can be submitted in person or through the mail. Veterans will need to provide a letter from the Veterans Administration stating a determination date verifying a 100% service related disability, or documentation verifying unemployability due to disability as well as a copy of their DD 2214 discharge papers.
